Oxygen masks & Tadasana. Part 1.

Dear Solid Friend.

Let’s begin with a bit of Conscious Breathing.  Gently allowing our breath to flow through us as we watch the flow in, and the flow out.

No forcing anything, just watching, and allowing.

Feeling ourselves settle into our bodies and feel that stillness that lies beneath the  breath…

When was the last time you were on an airplane?  Even if it has been a long time, you are probably familiar with the standard operating instructions from the flight attendants who tell us, “Should the cabin lose pressure, oxygen masks will drop from the overhead area. If this should occur, please place the mask over your own mouth and nose before assisting others.”

Most of us, by now, probably recognize the importance of putting our masks on first; it is pretty obvious that if I lose my ability to breathe, I will be of no help to anyone else.  Very easy to see when we’re traveling on an airplane, and maybe even easy to see as a conceptual metaphor for our lives.

Yet putting this concept into practice is not always that easy.

We say yes when we mean no.

We accept behavior that is hurtful.

We “bend over backwards.”

We “hit our heads against the wall.”

franticWe try to control the behavior of others.

We get passive aggressive.

We placate.

We coddle.

We hide the truth.

We lie.

All are Ego Actions that indicate we are not fully breathing into our own masks.  In fact, these are indications that we are really scrambling around grabbing at  each other’s oxygen masks, everyone trying to breath into one of them all at the same time.

Sometimes it can be a whole enmeshed family system trying to breathe through the same mask.  It can be a group of friends or co-workers, too.  Anywhere that our Stories can get activated is potentially a place where we can forget that we each have our own individual oxygen masks.

Think about this.  If there is more than one person gasping for air through one mask, none of them are receiving one hundred percent concentration of this Life-sustaining substance.  Without it, we begin to feel fuzzy.  We can’t see clearly.  We lose perspective.  We start to feel dizzy, and begin to feel a sense of suffocation, which leads to fear, then anxiety, and if not rectified, can turn into full blown panic as we anticipate possible death.

Imagine yourself in a situation with people in your life where you get pulled into some of the Ego-actions mentioned above.

frantic-headSee the image of yourself desperately gasping for air as you “maneuver” around trying to breath; your Ego Story telling you that your oxygen is dependent on that one mask that no one has a complete grasp on, yet everyone is grabbing for.

Now imagine that you realize that you’re grabbing out there for something that is, in reality, lying very much within your reach.  If you take a moment, take a conscious breath, and center yourself, can you imagine turning your Light on and remembering that your oxygen mask is so close that all you have to do to change the situation is to reach inside yourself and put it on?

Metaphorically speaking, that oxygen mask is the conduit to your connection to your God, the Source of your Essence Self.

If you remember that the existence of this connection is the one thing you can rely on, just like oxygen flowing through the tubes into the mask, no matter what is going on externally, can you imagine how you might realize, almost instantly, that your supply is always available?  solid-spiral-self

Can you imagine the realization that you do not have to rely on anyone else’s mask for sustenance?

Can you imagine the relief you might feel when you really get it that they have their own mask too; that it is not your responsibility to share your mask?

Can you imagine that once you find yours and put it on, it will be much clearer how you can point to the mask of your loved ones and remind them to put on their own masks?

You will all breath easier.

(Part 2 to follow…)

Put your Oxygen Mask on, and remember:

I am brilliant;

I am magnificent;

I am a being of Love and Light.

I am here to bring my Essence Self to every experience of my Life.
